AN ANALYSIS ON THE STUDENTS’ GRAMMATICAL COMPETENCE IN THEIR ENGLISH TRANSLATING TEXT

The aim of this research is to know the students’ grammatical competence in translating Indonesian text into English text at the Fifth Semester English Department Teacher Training and Education at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The researcher used text as the instrument to collect the data. This text aimed to examine the competence to translate the paragraphs of Indonesian into English text, which the text was descriptive text. The data was collected through translation test. The participants were the Fifth Semester students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar and it consisted of 20 students as the sample with Purposive Sampling Technique. After analyzing and calculating the data, the researcher found that percentage of the mean score of the students’ competence in translating Indonesian sentences into English in descriptive text was 76 and the percentage was 76%. Therefore, the researcher concluded that students’ grammatical competence in Translating skill in descriptive text at Fifth Semester of English Education Department 2019 in Muhammadiyah University of Makassar is categorized as good category.
