Abstract

Child marriage is often rooted in deep gender inequality, which disproportionately affects girls.
This practice not only robs them of their childhood but also endangers their health and safety.
Girls who marry before the age of 18 are more likely to experience domestic violence and are
less likely to continue their education. Various policies at both global and national levels reflect a
strong commitment, including from the Government of Indonesia, to prevent child marriage.
However, this commitment must be strengthened with appropriate strategies that take into
account the current situation and adopt proven approaches to address child marriage in
Indonesia. One approach that can be implemented is the introduction of the Basic Life Skills
Curriculum for adolescents. This community service activity was carried out in Jabiren, Central
Kalimantan, focusing on students of SMPN 1 Jabiren Raya. The results showed that 37 students
(92.5%) demonstrated high-level perception improvement, while 3 students (7.5%) were in the
low category. This indicates that the majority of students have developed a good understanding
and positive perception regarding the issue of child marriage. Life skills education plays a vital
role in shaping outstanding youth character. Adolescents with strong character tend to grow
into individuals who are physically healthy, emotionally stable, and intellectually developed.
Investment in life skills and vocational training—including financial literacy and job skills—can
empower girls and support their safe transition from education to productive employment,
thereby serving as an effective strategy to reduce the incidence of child marriage.
